Nine students interns joined the Interactive Knowledge Capture group this summer, including four high-school students and two undergraduates. Students were Jorge Edo (a design major), Javier Hernandez (a senior at Lancaster High School), Rose Goueth (a junior at Smith college), Nayely Martinez (a junior at Carleton College), Felix Michel (a Masters student at the Technical University of Munich), Paul Miyazaki (a Masters student at USC), Arlene Siswanto (a junior at Mark Keppel High School), Anna Zeng (a freshman at Stanford University), and Kevin Zeng (a junior at Mission San Jose High School). They participated in several ongoing research projects concerning the use of intelligent systems for science.
Rose, Arlene, Javier, Nayely and Jorge contributed to an education project to teach data science to non-programmers. They developed lessons about data analytics, workflows, provenance, and data citation among others. The lessons included videos with real-life examples and practice problems. Nayely had an opportunity to demonstrate her lessons to physician Sarah Rubin and science teacher Lea Pruefer.
Anna, Kevin, and Paul worked on the GeoSoft project to improve scientific software sharing in geosciences. Paul designed intelligent tools to help scientists describe software that runs complex scientific models. Anna and Kevin had a chance to participate in a week-long field trip with several geologists to learn how they collect data and what technology might be useful to them. This activity was part of the National Science Foundation's EarthCube initiative to improve the cyberinfrastructure available to geoscientists.
Felix worked on the development of a platform for collaborative science that enables unanticipated participants to join in and tracks everyone¿s contributions. He worked with hydrologists and limnologists to develop new approaches to specify and manage collaborative tasks across different disciplines.
